What Decarbonization Means for the Future of HVAC

February 7, 2024

The push for decarbonization in HVAC means a shift in regulations, standards, and equipment. Here’s what decarbonization means for the future of HVAC.

Every industry is impacted by growing climate concerns and requirements for more sustainable products. Here’s what to know about the shift to decarbonization in HVAC.

How Decarbonization Impacts HVAC

Decarbonization refers to minimizing or eliminating carbon dioxide emissions, and it plays a central role in sustainability across homes and businesses.

The push for decarbonization in HVAC means a greener future and more sustainable heating and cooling systems. As federal, state and local policymakers work to combat climate change, new regulations are being put in place to lower emissions, increase efficiency, and take verified steps toward decarbonization. With heating and cooling accounting for about half of a home’s energy usage, these regulations are paving a new way forward in the industry.

Homeowners also want eco-friendly home solutions. About 80% of homeowners will pay more for sustainable heating, cooling, and water heating products, according to research by Rheem. Heat pump sales have also exceeded gas furnaces in recent years, signaling a shift to more efficient home equipment.

So, what does this mean for the future of HVAC?

Here are three key ways Rheem—and the industry as a whole—is tackling decarbonization.

1. Developing More Energy-Efficient Equipment

Decarbonization starts with equipment manufactured for a sustainable future. Rheem offers a wide assortment of innovative, ENERGY STAR®-certified essential home solutions across heating, cooling, and water heating designed to help homeowners use less energy—and save more money. In fact, Rheem’s ENERGY STAR products enable 15% to 40% savings on homeowners’ utility bills.

2. Phasing Out Older Equipment

As new decarbonization-focused regulations become the industry standard, older technology, components and materials, such as R-410A refrigerant, that contribute to global warming and greenhouse gas emissions will be phased down and replaced with more environmentally friendly substitutes.

3. Shifting to Electrification

Moving away from carbon energy sources and toward electrification is a key piece of the decarbonization puzzle. Electrification of residential buildings can be a cost-effective and actionable way to reduce carbon emissions. Many states and local municipalities offer financial rewards and incentives to help homeowners move toward electrification and away from fossil fuel-dependent solutions. Rheem is broadening its portfolio of electric HVAC equipment to enable consumers to take advantage of funding and incentives.

Although these efforts mark a big shift in the HVAC industry, Rheem is committed to building a more sustainable industry while protecting consumers’ access to a broad portfolio of affordable heating and cooling solutions.
